The Adventures of Gaia – I

Meeting Gaia

Gaia was born in Stockholm on the 24th of June, 2009, and for the first 8 weeks of her life she was cared for by a lovely lady named Berit Jansson who has Scandal Beauty’s Kennel. She was one of 7 black standard schnauzer siblings born to dam Mira and dog Malte. When we first met her she was far from shy. She came running. She jumped. She sniffed and she played. She tasted and bit her sharp little puppy teeth into everything. Especially shoelaces. But being attacked by a litter of puppies is hardly offensive. Puppy love makes even the hardest soul smile.

So on meeting Gaia we were all smiles. Bringing a pup home with us was something we took seriously, as should be done, as a dog is a creature that has many needs. Grooming, feeding, socialising, vaccination and training, not to mention affection, are just some of the areas that need attention. Berit led us through some of the things we would need to know and then we were ready to hit the road for that long ride back to Oslo.

Gaia weighed just around 5 kg and we had prepared a little carton box for her to rest comfortably in. Pups grow at such an amazing rate at this age so buying a cage was not really an issue and the box allowed for some light chewing with those itchy puppy teeth. It didn’t seem like being stuck in a box was her idea of fun, so many stops were required along the way, to catch some air, drink some water, go poop and just rest. Being separated from her family was probably not her idea of fun either but she seemed to take it in her stride.

A tough and curious little soul got in a large moving silver box and travelled 600 km. Arriving in Oslo, a whole new life would start and we were all excited to be part of it. The adventure was just beginning.
