Trash emptying really slowly in OSX?
Recently I experienced that emptying the trash on my iMac i7 OSX 10.6.6 was taking painfully long to complete. I was tearing my hair out. In fact, as I was deleting over 500 GB on an external hardrive (through FireWire 800 Mbit/sec) I almost couldn’t see any progression at all. As a result the space on the drive didn’t clear and I had to reformat the whole thing. Or so I thought.
I found out that, in fact, I had at some point checked the ‘secure delete’ option in Finder preferences. By unchecking this option I was back to having a full set of hair and all smiles again.
When in Finder, go to the Preferences menu, select the Advanced tab and deselect ‘Empty Trash Securely’ and hey presto!
